I grew up on Hessle Road when it was the centre of the fishing community. Every other house had someone who worked on the trawlers. The pubs were full, the shops were busy, and there was a real sense of pride in the area. Everyone knew everyone and people looked out for each other.
When the fishing industry collapsed in the 70s it ripped the soul out of that whole community. The men lost their jobs, the pubs emptied, the shops closed. The area never recovered. Drive down Hessle Road now and you can still see it. Boarded up buildings, run down houses, a general feeling of neglect that's been there for decades.
What frustrates me is that the city centre has had millions poured into it since City of Culture but areas like Hessle Road seem to get forgotten. The people there deserve better. They built this city with their hands and their backs and now they're living in an area that nobody in power seems to care about.
There's a memorial for the triple trawler disaster on St Andrew's Quay which is fitting. But memorials aren't enough. The community needs investment, jobs, and hope. Not another empty promise from the council.
Anyone else from the Hessle Road area? What's your experience of how it's changed?
