I saw another one of those “worst places to live” lists online the other day and Hull was on it again. Written by someone who’s probably never set foot here. It proper winds me up.
Every time Hull gets mentioned nationally it’s either a joke or something negative. But the reality is completely different. We’ve got a Premier League football club, two professional rugby league teams, a university that’s growing every year, a revitalised city centre, and house prices that actually let normal people get on the property ladder.
The City of Culture legacy is real. Look at the Fruit Market area — five years ago it was empty warehouses, now it’s full of independent cafes, galleries, and creative businesses. Humber Street Sesh is one of the best free music festivals in the country.
I think the problem is Hull’s location. We’re not on the way to anywhere, so people just don’t pass through. If you don’t come to Hull deliberately, you’ll never discover what it has to offer.
Anyone else feel like Hull deserves way more recognition than it gets?

100%. I work with people from all over the country and when I tell them I’m from Hull they always pull a face. Then when they actually visit they’re shocked at how nice it is. The Old Town, the Deep, the Humber Bridge — they had no idea any of it existed. We’re basically England’s best kept secret.
