I think its worth having an honest conversation about where we are as a club right now. Without the knee jerk reactions after a bad result or the over excitement after a good one.
If you look at the table objectively we're in a strange position. Not in immediate danger but nowhere near where the ownership's investment suggested we should be. The squad has talent no one can deny that but there's a disconnect between the quality on paper and what we're producing on the pitch week in week out.
January window was mixed. We brought in bodies but whether they're the right bodies for what we need is another question. Still obvious gaps particularly in central midfield and at full back that haven't been addressed properly for two windows now.
So where does that leave us realistically?
If we're being honest with ourselves the playoffs are probably gone. The gap is too big and we'd need a run of form that nothing this season suggests we're capable of. That's not negativity its just maths.
Top half finish should be the minimum. Anything from 8th to 12th feels about right given what I've seen. That might sound underwhelming but consolidation isn't always a bad thing if it comes with a clear plan for next season.
The bigger question for me is what happens in the summer. Are we building towards something or are we just treading water? Because another season of mid table mediocrity without a clear direction would be worse than a bad season with a clear identity.
Where do you think we'll end up? And more importantly where do you think we should be aiming?
