My sister lives in Brighton and she genuinely does not understand why I care about Hull City. She asked me last week why I was stressed about a football game and I tried to explain and I could hear how insane it sounded coming out of my mouth.
Because twenty two men I've never met are kicking a ball around a field in a city I live in and whether that ball goes into a net or not will determine my mood for the next three days. Because I pay money every month to sit in the same seat and shout at people who can't hear me. Because a man called Vipotnik who I wouldn't recognise in the street has more influence over my emotional wellbeing than most people in my actual life.
She said that sounds unhealthy. And she's probably right. But when I tried to explain the feeling of Windass scoring at Wembley, or the roar when we came back from 2 0 down against Stoke this season, or my daughter singing come on you Tigers for the first time, she just didn't get it. You either feel it or you don't.
Football is stupid. Supporting a club in the Championship that might break your heart is even stupider. But it gives you something that nothing else in life does. A community. A shared experience. A reason to get up on a Saturday morning.
How do you explain it to people who don't understand?
