This argument has been going on for as long as I can remember and I want this forum to settle it once and for all. Is Cottingham part of Hull?
The facts. Cottingham is in the East Riding of Yorkshire, not Hull. It has its own parish council, its own identity, and people who live there will correct you very firmly if you say they live in Hull. It has a village green, a duck pond, and an annual Cottingham Day that celebrates its independence.
Counter argument. Cottingham is literally stuck to Hull. There's no gap. You drive from Anlaby into Cottingham and there's no countryside in between. It's a continuous built up area. Half the people who live in Cottingham work in Hull, shop in Hull, and support Hull City. The postcode starts with HU. Come on.
My theory is that Cottingham insists it's not part of Hull because house prices are higher there and they want to keep it that way. The moment Cottingham officially becomes Hull the property values drop and suddenly their four bed detached isn't worth what they paid for it.
I live in Anlaby which is the same situation but nobody in Anlaby pretends they're not basically Hull. We just accept it and get on with our lives.
Cottingham people. Explain yourselves.
