Kingston Upon Hull History
Been thinking about this lately. We all live here, support City, moan about the weather but how many of us actually know the full history of this place?
Hull was officially founded in 1293 when King Edward I bought the town from the monks of Meaux Abbey. That's where the "Kingston" comes from. King's Town upon Hull. Over 700 years of history right under our feet.
The city grew into one of the most important trading ports in England. Wool, cloth, fish going out. Timber, wine, grain coming in. The old town along the River Hull still has buildings dating back to the 14th century if you know where to look.
The fishing industry then defined Hull for centuries. At its peak Hull had one of the largest deep sea fishing fleets in the world. The Triple Trawler Disaster of 1968 changed everything and the women of Hull who marched for safety still deserve more recognition than they get.
William Wilberforce born here in 1759 led the movement that abolished the slave trade. Philip Larkin wrote some of the greatest poetry in the English language while working as a librarian at Hull University. Amy Johnson the first woman to fly solo to Australia grew up on Anlaby Road.
This city has given the world more than people realise.
