Friday night, can't be bothered cooking, phone's in hand. What are you ordering?
For me it depends on the mood. If I want comfort food it's Bob Carver's every time. Large haddock, chips, and curry sauce. Can't beat it. If I want something different the Turkish place on Spring Bank does an incredible mixed grill box that's about twelve quid and feeds you for two days.
Chinese is a tough one in Hull because quality varies massively. There's a place on Chanterlands Avenue that's consistently good, proper Cantonese style, not the battered everything nonsense you get at some places. The salt and pepper chips are dangerously addictive.
Pizza I'm going to be controversial and say Domino's is fine when it's on offer. Fight me. Although there's a proper independent pizza place in the Avenues area that does sourdough bases and it's on another level.
Indian is Doram or nothing. That lamb karahi on a Friday night with a garlic naan and a cold beer. That's the Hull weekend starter pack right there.
What's everyone ordering tonight?

Friday night takeaway order hasn't changed in about three years. Doram, lamb karahi, pilau rice, garlic naan, and a couple of poppadoms with the mango chutney. The whole thing comes to about sixteen quid and feeds two of us easily. If I'm feeling adventurous I'll swap the karahi for the chicken jalfrezi but honestly why mess with perfection. The lamb karahi from Doram is the single greatest dish available in Hull and I will die on that hill.

Chinese from Golden Dragon on Chanterlands Avenue. Salt and pepper chips, crispy shredded beef, and chicken fried rice. Comes to about fourteen quid and it's always banging. The delivery driver knows me by name now which is either a sign of good customer loyalty or a sign that I need to learn to cook. Probably the second one. Bob Carver's on a Saturday after the game though. That's non negotiable. Large haddock, chips, and scraps. The Saturday night tradition.
