I live about ten minutes from the waterfront and I've started walking down to the Humber after dark a couple of times a week. Not for any particular reason, just because it clears my head.
There's something about the river at night that puts everything in perspective. The lights from the south bank reflecting on the water. The sound of it moving, not waves exactly but a kind of constant gentle noise. The occasional ship passing through, lit up like a floating city. The bridge in the distance with its lights running along the cables.
Nobody else is ever there. You'd think a waterfront in a city of 250,000 people would have a few night owls wandering around but most nights I'm completely alone. Just me and the river and the cold air.
My wife thinks I'm going through a midlife crisis. Maybe I am. But standing by the Humber at eleven o'clock on a Wednesday night watching the water move is the most peaceful thing I do all week. It costs nothing and it makes everything else feel smaller and more manageable.
I know this is a football forum not a philosophy club. But if you live near the water and you've never gone down there after dark, try it. You might be surprised what it does for you.
