Every city has its quirks but Hull has more than most. Here are some things that make absolutely no sense to outsiders but are completely normal to us.
Chip spice. The greatest condiment ever invented and the rest of the country has no idea it exists. You go to a chippy outside Hull and ask for chip spice and they look at you like you've spoken another language. Then you have to eat naked chips like some kind of animal.
The phone boxes. Hull is the only city in the UK with its own phone network. The phone boxes are cream coloured instead of red. Most people under thirty have probably never used one but they're still there and they're still ours.
Saying nerr instead of no. Apparently this is hilarious to everyone who isn't from Hull. I don't hear it anymore because it just sounds normal to me but every time I'm away from home someone brings it up.
Ten foot. The alley behind your house. Everyone in England has one but only Hull calls it a ten foot. Apparently the rest of the country says ginnel or snicket or jitty. They're all wrong.
Hull Fair. Trying to explain to someone who's never been that an entire dual carriageway gets shut down for a week so a massive travelling funfair can set up on it. They never believe you until they see it.
What else would you add to this list?
