Right, this is the big one. Hull is a fishing city and we take our fish and chips seriously. But who does it best? I’ve been on a mission to find out.
My top three after years of dedicated research (and a few extra pounds round the waist):
1. Bob Carver’s on Spring Bank — The absolute classic. Been going since the 1950s and the quality hasn’t dropped. Proper thick batter, fresh fish, and the chips are spot on every single time. It’s a Hull institution for a reason.
2. Papas on Holderness Road — Slightly different style, a bit more modern, but the fish is always cooked perfectly. Their portions are massive too. Great value for money.
3. A1 Fish Bar on Anlaby Road — Underrated this one. Consistent quality, friendly staff, and they do a lovely mushy pea. The haddock here is chef’s kiss.
Honourable mention to Dene’s on Dene Street for the old-school experience. Nothing fancy, just proper fish and chips the way they should be.
Now I know everyone’s got an opinion on this, so let’s hear yours. And if anyone says a supermarket does better fish and chips than a proper Hull chippy, you’re getting b
anned.
