I've been cycling to work since I moved to Hull and the experience has been mixed. Some parts of the city are genuinely great for cycling. The path along the marina is lovely, there are some decent cycle lanes in the centre, and the flat terrain means you don't need legs like Chris Hoy to get around.
But some of the main roads are terrifying. Beverley Road is a death trap on a bike as I've mentioned before. Anlaby Road isn't much better during rush hour. And the cycle lanes that do exist often just disappear randomly or get blocked by parked cars.
Hull should be one of the best cycling cities in England because it's flat, compact, and the distances are short. But the infrastructure hasn't kept up. Compare it to York or Cambridge where cycling is taken seriously and there's a proper network of safe routes.
Does anyone cycle regularly in Hull? What routes do you use and how do you avoid getting squashed by a bus on Beverley Road?

I cycled to work for about a year before I gave up. The infrastructure just isn't there yet on the main routes. I had two near misses with buses on Anlaby Road and that was enough for me. Hull is flat and compact which should make it perfect for cycling but the roads aren't designed for it. If they ever sort out proper segregated cycle lanes on the main routes it would be amazing. Until then I'm driving because I value my life. Which is sad because the potential is massive.

I cycle everywhere and Hull is great for it as long as you pick your routes carefully. Avoid the main roads during rush hour and use the back streets and cycle paths instead. The route along the river from the university area into the city centre is mostly off road and it's pleasant. There's a decent path from Cottingham into Hull through the university campus that avoids Beverley Road entirely. The council has been adding more cycle lanes but they're inconsistent. Some are proper protected lanes, others are just painted lines on the road which are basically useless.
