Went into Princes Quay last weekend for the first time in months and it was depressing. Half the shops are empty, there was barely anyone in there, and the food court upstairs feels like a ghost town compared to what it used to be.
I remember when that place was buzzing. Going there as a kid was a proper treat. Topshop, HMV, all the good stuff. Now it's mostly discount shops and pop up stores that last about three weeks before disappearing.
I know high street retail is dying everywhere but Princes Quay seems worse than most. The building itself is actually quite cool being built over the dock but what's the point if nobody's using it?
Does anyone know if there are plans for it? I heard something about converting some of it to offices or flats but don't know if that's just a rumour. Seems like a waste of a decent buildi
ng.

It's sad what's happened to it. I remember going there on Saturday afternoons as a teenager and it was rammed. Every shop was open, the food court was buzzing, and it felt like the heart of the city centre. Now it's like walking through a ghost town. I think converting part of it into offices or residential is probably the right move because traditional retail just isn't coming back. The building itself is stunning with the dock underneath so it'd be a shame to see it empty.

High street retail is dying everywhere not just Hull. Look at any city centre in the country and half the shops are boarded up. The problem with Princes Quay specifically is that it was built for an era that doesn't exist anymore. People buy everything online now. The building needs to be repurposed for something that actually brings people in. Leisure, food, maybe some kind of market hall like they've done in other cities. Just sitting there half empty waiting for shops that are never coming back is pointless.
