Went night fishing down at Victoria Pier last Friday for the first time in about five years. Forgot how peaceful it is sitting there in the dark with just the sound of the water and the odd ship going past.
Didn't catch much. A couple of small whiting and something that might have been a dab but was too small to tell. It's not really about the catching though is it. It's about sitting there with a flask of tea at midnight watching the lights on the south bank and the bridge in the distance and just thinking about nothing for a few hours.
The Humber gets overlooked as a fishing spot because it's not exactly pretty water. But there's decent cod and whiting to be had in winter and bass further down towards Spurn in summer. You just need to know the tides and be prepared for the wind because it's exposed down there.
Any other Hull fishermen on here? Where do you go?

Haven't been night fishing for years but you've made me want to dig the rods out. Used to go down Victoria Pier with my old man and we'd sit there until midnight with flasks of tea and a bag of chips from the van on the way down. Never caught much but that wasn't really the point was it. There's something about sitting by the water in the dark that clears your head better than anything else. Might have to get back into it.

If you want proper fishing try the Holderness coast. Withernsea and Tunstall are both decent spots for cod in winter. You need to time it right with the tides but on a good night you can pull out some proper sized fish. I go about once a month and it's the most peaceful thing I do. No phone signal, no distractions, just you and the sea. The drive home at 2am with a boot full of fish and the empty roads is part of the experience.
