Everyone talks about the Deep, the Humber Bridge, City of Culture, the food scene. All great stuff. But for me the best thing about Hull is something nobody ever brings up. The sky.
Hull is flat. Properly flat. Which means you get these enormous skies that you just don't see in hilly cities. At sunset the whole western horizon goes orange and pink and it stretches forever. In autumn when the clouds are dramatic it looks like a painting. I've stood on the Humber Bridge walkway at dusk and watched the sky change colour for twenty minutes and it was as beautiful as anything I've seen abroad.
The flatness that people mock Hull for is actually its greatest natural feature. You can see for miles. The light is different here. Photographers know this. The reason the Humber looks so good at certain times of day is because there's nothing blocking the light between you and the horizon.
I know it sounds daft getting poetic about the sky in a city that's famous for grey weather. But when Hull gets a good sunset it's genuinely world class. And because nobody expects it, it hits different.
Anyone else notice this or am I just weird?
