What’s One Thing You’d Change About Hull?

I love this city but it’s not perfect. If you could change one thing about Hull, what would it be?
For me it’s the transport links. Getting anywhere by train takes forever. Hull to Manchester is nearly 2 hours, Hull to London is almost 3 on a good day. And don’t even get me started on the state of the roads — some of the potholes on Anlaby Road have their own postcodes at this point.
The bus service outside the city centre is patchy too. Try getting from one side of Hull to the other on a Sunday without a car. It’s basically impossible.
If Hull had better transport connections it would transform the city. More businesses would set up here, more people would visit, property prices would rise. The isolation that makes Hull charming is also what holds it back economically.
What would you change? And keep it constructive — this isn’t a moan thr
ead!

Shopping. The city centre has improved massively but the retail offering is still behind Leeds and Sheffield. We lost a lot of big stores and they haven’t been replaced. The Princes Quay situation is frustrating — half empty and it used to be buzzing. Would love to see more independent shops filling those gaps.

I’d bring back the old Boothferry Park and the area around it. I know it’s houses now but that whole part of Hull lost its soul when the ground went. More seriously though, I’d invest in the areas outside the city centre. The Fruit Market and Old Town look great but some of the estates are still struggling. Hull’s regeneration needs to reach everyone, not just the waterfront.
