Wrexham vs Hull City: What a Night for the Tigers!
Lads, I’m still buzzing this morning here in Hessle, kettle on, replaying the highlights on my laptop. Tuesday night at the STōK Cae Ras and our Hull City came away with a proper gutsy 2-1 win against Wrexham. Six points clear of them now in the table – that’s no fluke, that’s us showing we belong in the play-off mix. I’ve followed this club through thick and thin, from the old Boothferry Park days to the MKM Stadium glory, and nights like this remind me why we’re the best fans in the Championship.
The Build-Up – Rain, Reynolds and Revenge
We knew it was going to be tough. Wrexham had just come off that mad FA Cup run, losing 4-2 after extra time to Chelsea on Saturday, and you could see the legs were a bit heavy. Kieffer Moore was missing with a dodgy hamstring – massive blow for them. Their gaffer Phil Parkinson admitted the dressing room felt a bit flat. Meanwhile, our lads under Sergej Jakirović flew up the M62 feeling confident after that strong away form. Ryan Reynolds was in the stands too – Hollywood watching the Tigers roar. Proper theatre.
I watched it from my settee with a couple of mates from Cottingham, proper East Yorkshire crew, and straight away you could tell we meant business in that driving Welsh rain.
First Half – Gelhardt Magic and That Saved Pen
We started bright. Cody Drameh nicked the ball early and Callum Doyle’s shot nearly flew in. Then on 40 minutes – absolute worldie. Charlie Hughes wins a free-kick on the edge, up steps Joe Gelhardt (on loan from Leeds, absolute bargain) and he whips it right into the top corner. Arthur Okonkwo got a hand to it but couldn’t keep it out. 1-0 Tigers!
Four minutes later we should have been 2-0. Gelhardt goes down in the box after a lovely one-two with Oli McBurnie – pen given. Same lad steps up… and Okonkwo saves it to his left. Heart in mouth moment, but fair play to the keeper. Still, we went in at half-time 1-0 up and looking comfortable.
Second Half – Koumas Header and the Wrexham Fightback
Wrexham came out fighting after the break – Parkinson threw on Oliver Rathbone at half-time and they looked sharper. But on 63 minutes we hit them on the counter. Liam Millar bursts forward, Okonkwo saves his shot, but from the corner Millar swings it in and Lewis Koumas (our Liverpool loan kid) rises like a salmon and heads it home. 2-0! What a moment – the Welsh lads behind the goal went quiet.
Wrexham pulled one back on 76. Sub Issa Kabore loops a cross in and Nathan Broadhead turns it home. Game on. They threw everything at us after that – Josh Windass and sub Jay Rodriguez had chances, but our back three (Hughes, Egan, McNair) were rocks. Ivor Pandur made a couple of big saves in the rain and we held firm. Full-time whistle – 2-1 to the Tigers!
We’re fifth now on 63 points, six clear of Wrexham in sixth. Play-offs are in our hands. Eight wins in our last ten away league games – that’s proper Championship form. Acun Ilıcalı will be loving this back in Turkey, and the whole city of Hull is talking about it today down Anlaby Road and in the pubs round the KC.
Wrexham are still a good side – Parkinson’s done wonders with the Hollywood money – but we showed we can go to their place, take the points and keep the dream alive.
Final Thoughts from a Proper Hull Lad
This wasn’t just three points. This was a statement. We’ve come through the tough spells, stuck with the gaffer, backed the lads through thick and thin, and now we’re marching towards the Premier League. The Tigers are roaring again.
Up the Tigers – we’re going up!

Quick stat for the nerds: first time we’ve done the league double over Wrexham since 1948-49. History made!
Hero Ratings – Who Stood Out?- Joe Gelhardt – 9/10 Worldie goal, pen miss but still ran himself into the ground
- Lewis Koumas – 9/10 Header of the season and linked play brilliantly
- Charlie Hughes – 9.5/10 Captain fantastic, Player of the Match, won everything
- Liam Millar – 8/10 Two assists basically, dangerous all night
- Ivor Pandur – 8/10 Big saves when it mattered
- Rest of the lads – solid 7s and 8s. Jakirović got the tactics spot on again
