Hull Fair is coming round again this year and I've been thinking about my earliest memories of it. I think I was about four the first time my parents took me. I remember being absolutely terrified of the waltzers and crying until my dad won me a goldfish on the hook a duck. The goldfish died within a week obviously because Hull Fair goldfish have a shorter life expectancy than a Hull City manager.
As a teenager Hull Fair was all about going with your mates, eating yourself sick on candy floss and hot dogs, and pretending you weren't scared on the rides. The smell of the generators mixed with toffee apples and frying onions is permanently burned into my memory.
Now I take my daughter and the cycle starts again. She was terrified last year and cried until I bought her brandy snap. History repeating itself. But she talks about Hull Fair all year round and starts asking when it's coming back in about January.
The whole concept of Hull Fair is mad when you think about it. They shut down an entire dual carriageway for a week so a massive funfair can set up. Try explaining that to someone from another city. They think you're making it up.
