Newland Avenue has become Hull's go to strip for a Friday night out and I've got mixed feelings about it. On one hand the range of food and drink options is brilliant. You can start with tapas at Ambiente, move on to craft beer at one of the bars, grab a late night kebab, and walk home without needing a taxi. That's the dream.
On the other hand it gets absolutely rammed and some of the clientele after about eleven o'clock are not exactly sophisticated. Last Friday I watched a bloke try to eat a kebab while lying on the pavement outside the offie. He wasn't homeless or anything, just hammered. His mate was filming it and laughing. Classic Newland Avenue.
The pub crawl potential is excellent though. Start at the Gardeners Arms, which is a proper old school pub with decent ales. Then you've got a few bars in a row that all have their own character. End up at the takeaway of your choice and stagger home.
For food without the chaos, go earlier. Friday evening about six or seven the restaurants are lovely. By ten it's a different planet.
Where do you lot go on Newland Ave?
